Summary
The GHN-Colloquium talk series features the female scientists of the Grete-Hermann-Network (GHN)—a newly founded international network of female researchers in condensed matter physics and neighboring research areas. Distinguished female researchers are invited to give a lecture on their research and current projects, as well as about their career paths, to inspire young female scientists in particular, and to exchange ideas. After the official talk there will be an internal GHN-networking event.
On 07 December 2021 we are happy to welcome Dr. Lakshmi Bhaskaran from HZDR who will give an online scientific talk on Quantum Magnets from the perspective of Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy.
Talk abstract
Quantum magnets serve as model systems for developing and testing new fundamental concepts in solid-state physics, including magnetic field-induced evolution of the ground-state properties that manifest as rearrangements in magnetic excitation spectra. One of the most powerful tools for studying magnetic excitations with exceptional resolution and sensitivity is the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. This talk will briefly overview the experimental technique and the ESR facility at Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD-HZDR), followed by some examples of high-frequency/ high-field ESR studies on quantum magnets. In particular, the talk includes a detailed discussion of recent observations of gapped magnon modes and estimation of spin Hamiltonian parameters of non-honeycomb Iridium-based Kitaev materials
About Lakshmi Bhaskaran
Lakshmi Bhaskaran is a postdoctoral researcher at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HLD) of Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR). Originally from India, she did her Ph.D. at National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Tallahassee, Florida, USA. Her research interest includes investigating magneto-structural correlations, spin dynamics, and other exotic properties in various quantum materials. She primarily uses the powerful microscopic probe of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in high magnetic fields and low temperatures to explore these unfamiliar territories. Apart from research, she also enjoys leadership and organizational activities as part of a group of postdoc representatives at HZDR.
