“A Wonderful Start” – ct.qmat Launches German-Japanese Research Partnership in Quantum Technologies

The Würzburg-Dresden Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat hosted a German-Japanese workshop on February 26 and 27, 2024, setting the course for close collaboration between researchers from both countries. Around 70 participants from Germany and Japan convened in Würzburg to discuss their latest findings in quantum physics research. Organized by ct.qmat and supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the workshop delved into areas such as topology, photonics, magnetism, and the dynamics of electron correlation in solids. This exchange of ideas paved the way for joint projects in the coming years.

“This was a wonderful start for our German-Japanese research collaboration in quantum technologies,” declared ct.qmat’s Würzburg spokesperson Professor Ralph Claessen. “We have laid the foundation for a promising partnership with our Japanese colleagues. We’re especially hopeful that strong bonds will be forged among the next generation of researchers from both countries,” Claessen added.

For this event in Würzburg, 16 Japanese scientists, including several junior researchers, made the journey from Tokyo, bringing with them their latest insights on topology, photonics, magnetism, and electron correlations in solids. These subjects are also among the research areas of the Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat, and spurred vibrant discussions throughout the two-day gathering. The lecture program featured 23 speakers sharing their findings, including 12 from Japan. Another highlight was the 18 poster presentations, mainly from Würzburg and Dresden. Moreover, the German-Japanese workshop offered plenty of networking opportunities, such as during a poster session. “This successful start proved to be a source of momentum for our collaborative projects for the years ahead,” Claessen emphasized.
